Ten of the Best Pools in the World

Pools that stretch out to infinity, ocean views, city roof tops and pool party days…here are my top ten best pools in the world….

Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali

As soon as you arrive at Alila Villas Uluwatu the first thing that you lay your eyes on is a wide expanse of blue…DSC_8245
As a central water feature leads to the gorgeous fifty metre high cliff top pool which seems to merge with the ocean beyond. A stunning patchwork of beautiful blues to enjoy in the Balinese sun. DSC_8597
Perched at the end of the pool is the Sunset Cabana, an incredible design feature, with comfortable cushions to recline on with a cocktail in hand whilst watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California

Post Ranch Inn has to be one of my favourite hotels of all time, located 1,200 feet high along a Californian cliff just off the Pacific Coast Highway, the hotel has breathtaking views and world-class service and food. With a wood-burning fire place and hot tub in our room, a super zen spa and opportunities for star-gazing it was the perfect place for romance while we were on honeymoon.

There are two heated infinity spa pools located on the property which just seem to hang over the cliff edge with a view out to the ocean.

The Library, Koh Samui, Thailand

I stayed at The Library hotel the first time that I visited Thailand about eight years ago. I loved that fact that the modern, design hotel was themed around books with interesting artwork, a huge library of books and a restaurant called The Page.

But the most stand out feature of the hotel is the blood-red pool, contrasting to the clean white lines of the hotel and the pristine sandy beach beyond. KS300
The pool is lined with mosaic tiles in orange, yellow and red giving it a deep and glittering effect, perfect to sit by and watch the sunset whilst sipping on a Bloody Mary…

Gansevoort Hotel, Meatpacking District, New York

Cool pools aren’t all about ocean views.

Mr S and I loved the high rise pool on the roof of the Gansevoort Hotel with the view over the Meatpacking District.DSC06272
During the day it was a relaxed oasis away from the busy city but as the sun dipped the adjacent bar starts to liven up, the perfect place for a few drinks before a night out in the city that never sleeps.

Hanging Gardens, Ubud, Bali

One of the most architecturally stunning pools I’ve ever seen was the twin-tiered pool at the Hanging Gardens Hotel in Bali. DSC_8214
The first tier juts out from the hotel bar and cascades in a waterfall down to a larger pool which appears to float right in the middle of the Balinese jungle.DSC_8108
The pool is the central feature to the unique hotel which has been built on a 45 degree angle using principles of Feng Shui to create a totally breathtaking effect.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Often photographed and frequently appearing in lists of the world’s coolest pools, the rooftop pool at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is the largest and highest pool in the world. DSC_9323
Perched aloft the famous trio of towers and seemingly hanging over the edge of the precipice, when you swim in the pool you feel like you’re on top of the world. The pool is 57 floors up and below the busy streets and towers of Singapore seem like they’re totally miles away. However, you can only swim in the pool if you’re staying at the hotel and in my opinion it’s not really worth it as the pool was so crowded. Better just to get a drink at the Ce la Vi bar and enjoy the panoramic view.

The Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles

For me The Beverly Hills Hotel epitomised old-school Hollywood glamour and one of the highlights of the beautiful property was the glamorous pool area…DSC08883
With the beautiful pink cabanas and adjacent Cabana Cafe, I loved enjoying the sunshine and imagining the days when stars such as Rita Hayworth, Faye Dunaway and Lucille Ball used to relax there.

Jade Mountain, St Lucia

The incredible sanctuaries at Jade Mountain in St Lucia have only three walls and in place of the fourth is the most beautiful infinity pool, varying in size depending on which room category that you stay in.

Our Galaxy suite had an incredible view of the Pitons and scenery that was so beautiful it was almost unreal. DSC_1142
The pools themselves are lined with bespoke glass tiles, created especially for Jade Mountain, and each room has a unique colour scheme of glittering, iridescent glass. By night the pool is illuminated by fibre optics and guests can cycle through the range of colours in the system. DSC_1451

Singita Boulders, Sabi Sands, South Africa

Every one of the 12 suites at luxury safari lodge, Singita Boulders, has its own private plunge pool.  DSC_8228
I loved the fact that you had your own private decking and seating area with the most glorious view out into the wilderness….DSC_8635
Plus you never know who might stop by…

The Encore, Las Vegas

It’s total extravagant opulence whilst still maintaining class, Mr S and I loved the pool at the Encore Hotel. Though there are several pools, the European, adult’s only pool is our favourite. DSC09335
There’s a casino in the centre of the pool and you can leap out of the pool and grab a drink at the bar before a round of roulette. If you want a bit of shade from the harsh desert sun, than there are cabanas available to rent with your own TV, fridge and snacks. If you want to truly go wild, head to the Encore Beach club for a day of hedonism, great drinks and world-class DJs.

What is the best pool you’ve ever seen? Do you prefer an infinity lagoon or a dip rooftop pool with a view of the city?
